A global rulemaker is seeking stakeholder input on possible sustainability reporting standards for the mining industry, saying Tuesday that reporting for the sector remains inadequate.
Announcing the start of a public comment period, the Global Reporting Initiative said that all companies involved in extractive industries should report their impacts on the environment, society, and the economy. The initiative’s voluntary standards, written by the Global Sustainability Standards Board, are used by more than 10,000 companies globally and underpin the mandatory reporting rules being introduced by the EU in 2024.
