Toyobo Will Pay $66 Million to Settle Faulty Body Armor Case

Toyobo Co. Ltd. will pay $66 million to end its involvement in False Claims Act litigation alleging that it provided Zylon fiber used in bullet proof vests various government agencies purchased, the Justice Department said.

Toyobo allegedly knew that the Zylon degraded quickly in normal heat and humidity but hid that information in order to keep selling vests, the government said.

The settlement is part of a larger investigation undertaken by the Civil Division of the body armor industry’s use of Zylon, and brings the division’s overall recoveries to more than $132 million, the announcement said.
