The Justice Department recovered more than $2.8 billion in settlements and judgments under False Claims Act cases, in 2018.
That brings the total recovery to more than $59 billion since the 1986 statutory amendments to the FCA.
In 2018, $2.5 billion of the $2.8 billion involved the healthcare industry, including drug manufacturers, hospitals, and physicians, the department’s Dec. 21 announcement said.
And $2.1 billion of the $2.8 billion arose from the 645 lawsuits filed by whistleblowers. Whistleblowers themselves recovered $301 million out of the $2.1 billion, the department said.
