Illinois Home Health-Care Companies Liable in Kickback Scheme

Illinois home health-care companies violated the False Claims Act by engaging in a kickback scheme whereby they paid a senior citizen support organization in return for information about potential Medicare-eligible clients to increase sales of services, an Illinois federal court said.

The $5,000 monthly fee Management Principles Inc. and others paid to access data owned by Healthcare Consortium of Illinois about potential clients constituted knowing and willful remuneration in exchange for referrals, Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois ruled.
