BP, Chevron, Exxon, Others Beat Antitrust Case Over Gas Prices

Affiliates of BP Plc, Chevron Corp., Exxon Mobil Corp., and five other major oil companies escaped federal antitrust litigation in San Diego over their alleged scheme to fix gasoline prices in California, which has a unique fuel market because of state energy regulations.

Judge Jinsook Ohta granted summary judgment for the companies, throwing out proposed class actions on behalf of consumers and gas stations. The lawsuits mostly failed to prove collusion, and there’s no evidence the limited coordination actually raised retail gas prices, the judge found.
