New EPA Cleanup Plan Quicker, Less Certain for 1,300 Sites

The EPA is embracing a management approach that could make Superfund cleanups quicker, cheaper, and more efficient—but also potentially more uncertain for the companies involved.

The Environmental Protection Agency is adopting an incremental approach to Superfund site cleanup called “adaptive management.” The approach encourages site managers and others in the Superfund program to continually re-evaluate a site’s risks in between cleanup actions. The agency announced the policy July 13.
