Youth Organizers Point Climate Movement in New Direction

The climate action movement is setting its sights on structural and social issues, a push being led by some of its youngest activists.

It’s time for climate action to encompass social justice, said Arvind Reddy, a member of a youth-led climate action group called the Sunrise Movement. Reddy said it’s no longer enough to ask lawmakers and businesses to cut emissions, as previous climate action movements have done. Climate change is a product of racism, capitalism, and other structural systems—so real change can only happen when the people affected by those systems are empowered, they said.
