Wyoming, Montana Gas Lease Sales Need Sage-Grouse Review (1)

The Bureau of Land Management must take a harder look at how oil and gas lease sales in Wyoming and Montana will impact greater sage-grouse before it can authorize new drilling or surface disturbing activities there, an Idaho federal court ruled.

The agency failed to properly consider the direct, indirect, and cumulative impacts on the bird when it approved the leases, according to the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho. BLM also failed to consider the alternative of deferring priority sage-grouse habitat, the court said Wednesday.
