China’s carbon emissions are going up after three years of relative stability, prompted in part by new government measures launched in 2016 to stimulate industrial growth.
Emissions went up 4 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year and increased by 120 million metric tons in 2017, a study from gas and oil giant BP Plc said. The increase represents the most year-on-year growth for any country.
