Wildlife Agency Drops Appeal to Court-Ordered Red Wolf Releases

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will no longer contest a federal judge’s order that it must continue releasing captive red wolves into a recovery area in North Carolina, according to a filing in the Fourth Circuit.

The agency previously said it was limited to releasing only 12 wolves and that no other releases were authorized. The policy drew a challenge by conservation groups, who said at the time of their lawsuit filed in November that only seven known red wolves remain in the wild.
