Wild Horse Adoption Program Draws Suit Citing Slaughter Concerns

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management should be blocked from adopting or selling any more wild horses because it’s failing to stop the animals from being resold for meat, an animal rights group says in a Monday filing in a federal court in Colorado.

The agency’s adoption incentive program violates Congress’ ban on the slaughter of wild horses, according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. The agency also approved the program without environmental review in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act, the lawsuit says.
