Water Tax, Fees Dammed in California Legislature

California lawmakers failed to advance bills that would have created an annual multimillion-dollar fund to help nearly 1 million people in California who lack access to safe drinking water.

The Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund would’ve created a voluntary fee and a separate water quality bill would’ve taxed dairy handlers and fertilizer sellers. The money was intended to support low-income communities whose source of water is contaminated with pollutants including arsenic, nitrates, and other compounds.
