Washington State Lawmakers Vote to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags

Washington state would ban single-use plastic bags or paper bags not meeting minimum recycled content requirements under a bill passed by the state Legislature.

If the measure is signed by Gov. Jay Inslee (D), Washington would join California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New York, Oregon and Vermont in enacting bans on single-use plastic bags, according to data by the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The bill (SB 5323), passed Monday, would allow retailers one year to provide single-use bags from existing inventory. Violators of the carry-out bag requirements would be subject to a $250 fine to be enforced ...
