Wartsila to Develop Pure Hydrogen Engines for Green Grids

Technology group Wartsila Oyj is developing a combustion process that will allow natural-gas fired generators to run on 100% hydrogen for a low-carbon way to balance renewable-focused energy grids.

The aim of the project is to use renewable fuels, such as hydrogen produced from water, to top-up battery storage when wind and solar generation is low, the company said in a statement. Wartsila said this will reduce the size of battery storage, improve power system efficiency and provide security of supply.
