Virgin Islands Refinery’s Woes Escalate With Class Action Suit

A refinery in the U.S. Virgin Islands caught in the crosshairs of regulatory scrutiny since the Biden administration took office, has been slapped with a class action lawsuit by neighbors concerned over odors and fumes spewed by the facility.

The suit, filed Wednesday, accuses the Limetree Bay refinery of spreading harmful vapors that caused headaches and burning eyes to residents of the Caribbean island. The plant, which has a history of environmental incidents, was ordered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to shut last month until further notice, reversing an approval granted under the outgoing Trump administration.
