Upper Klamath Water Pact Advances,
Rights Holders Sign Agreement in Principle

A water use agreement in principle for Oregon’s Upper Klamath Basin that would increase the water level of a lake and reaffirm tribal water rights in exchange for changes in the method of allocating irrigation waters to other users was signed Dec. 4.

The agreement in principle culminates six months of negotiations over protection of the water rights of the Native Americans, the junior water rights of the landowners and the ecological needs of preserving fish, the parties said in statements. Signatories to the agreement included the federal and Oregon governments, landowners, representatives of water user groups and tribes.
