United Refining’s Renewable Fuels Petition Awaits SCOTUS Case

The Environmental Protection Agency will decide on United Refining Co.'s petition for an exemption from the Renewable Fuel Standard program after the U.S. Supreme Court weighs in on a pair of other companies’ exemptions, according to a filing in a Washington, D.C., federal court.

The Supreme Court is considering an appeal by units of HollyFrontier Corp. and Wynnewood Refining Co., which argue they were wrongly denied exemptions.

The program mandates that refineries blend plant-based fuels into their products. But the EPA can exempt small refineries if they show significant economic hardship would result from complying.
