UN Body Approves Offsets Airlines Can Use to Reduce Emissions

The world’s top aviation regulator has determined which credits and environmental benefits airlines can use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international flights.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a 36-country council under the United Nations, on Friday approved new guidelines for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, known as CORSIA. In doing so, the group accepted the advice of a technical body at a meeting in Montreal.

“We’re encouraged that this latest Council progress will bring clarity to the requirements to be placed on airlines,” ICAO Secretary General Fang Liu said in a statement.
