UK’s Inadequate Recycling Rates Laid Bare by China Import Ban

China’s crackdown on importing waste has exposed the British government’s failure to improve its domestic waste recycling rates in the last decade, leaders of the U.K.’s waste and recycling industries told a parliamentary committee Jan. 30.

“China has masked some of the failures” in the U.K.’s waste recycling system such as lack of investment in domestic recycling plants, said Pat Jennings, head of policy at the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management.
