Nuclear power plant employees can work additional hours if operators cannot meet staffing requirements due to the coronavirus, according to letter issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
- Employees can work up to 86 hours a week
- Regulations currently permit 72 hours a week
- Plant operators must request exemption
- Approval will be granted on case-by-cases basis
- Employees may work 12-hour shifts for 14 consecutive days
- NRC may issue additional guidance soon on deferring some maintenance work
