U.S. to Allow Nuke Employees to Work More in Response to Virus

Nuclear power plant employees can work additional hours if operators cannot meet staffing requirements due to the coronavirus, according to letter issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

  • Employees can work up to 86 hours a week
  • Plant operators must request exemption
    • Approval will be granted on case-by-cases basis
  • Employees may work 12-hour shifts for 14 consecutive days
  • NRC may issue additional guidance soon on deferring some maintenance work
