U.S. Opposing Climate Loss Aid at Madrid Talks, Groups Say (1)

The Trump administration is playing an “obstructionist” role at the international climate talks by opposing help for countries to pay for losses related to climate change, observer groups said Dec. 13.

The U.S. is challenging any effort among countries to create a funding mechanism—separate from other humanitarian aid and climate mitigation funding—that will help vulnerable countries pay for losses and damage related to climate change-driven extreme weather, according to Rachel Cleetus, policy director with the climate and energy program at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
