U.K.'s Proposed Plastics Tax Expected to Hit 20,000 Companies

The U.K. government has introduced draft legislation to tax companies that produce or import plastic packaging made up of less than 30% recycled material.

The tax would amount to 200 pounds ($263) per metric ton of plastic, and would take effect starting in April 2022, according to the draft legislation published Thursday.

  • The tax is expected to affect about 20,000 companies, which would need to register with the U.K. Revenue & Customs department, the government said. More than 2 million tons of plastic packaging are used annually in the U.K.
