Trump Administration Sued for Denying Joshua Tree Protections

The Trump administration ignored the likely effects of climate change in deciding that the Joshua tree doesn’t warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act, the conservation group WildEarth Guardians claims in a new federal lawsuit.

“The Joshua tree is an icon of the Southern California desert,” the group said, with its namesake national park attracting more than 2.9 million visitors in 2018. But climate change, along with the related threats of prolonged droughts, fire, and habitat losses, “are poised to eradicate Joshua trees from much of their current range by century’s end,” the group said in its complaint.
