Trucking Companies, EPA Reach $42 Million Cleanup Settlement

A pair of trucking companies will pay the EPA and Illinois $42 million to clean up pollution and restore natural resources at a former zinc smelter outside St. Louis, according to a proposed agreement in federal district court.

The federal government and Illinois signed a proposed consent decree with XTRA Intermodal Inc. and X-L-Co. to address contamination at the Old American Zinc Plant Superfund site in St. Clair and Madison counties. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois will need to sign off on the proposal, filed Tuesday, to finalize it.
