Toss Federal Changes to Red Grouper Catch Limits, Fishermen Say

The National Marine Fisheries Service must be blocked from reallocating the red grouper harvest in the Gulf of Mexico to benefit recreational fishermen, which threatens the fish population, commercial fishermen told a federal court in Washington, D.C.

The agency’s decision will increase bycatch by recreational anglers, reduce the red grouper population, and increase the risk of overfishing, according to the filing in the US District Court for the District of Columbia. This goes against the goals of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the motion for summary judgment says.
