Tighten Reviews When Companies Self-Report, EPA Watchdog Says

The EPA needs to tighten its screening of companies’ self-disclosures to catch criminal conduct and potential imminent hazards, the agency’s internal watchdog said in a report released Thursday.

Questions about the federal government’s broad ability to screen company submissions are especially sensitive given that the Securities and Exchange Commission wants to require companies to report their carbon emissions. That agency has been hamstrung by staff cuts, especially in the offices that handle enforcement and corporate filing reviews.
