Texas’ Power Reassurance Scorned as ‘False Confidence’ (Correct)

The threat of Texas blackouts this summer may not be as remote as state’s main electric grid operator suggests, according to power experts.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas said in a Monday report that the state has sufficient capacity to meet record electricity demand from June to September in all but the most dire -- and “low probability” -- scenarios involving “extreme” unplanned outages. The assessment is based on historical demand and outages, and comes 15 months after a severe winter storm crippled the grid and caused deadly blackouts.
