Tesla’s New York Solar Factory to Make Equipment for Rivals

Tesla Inc.’s giant solar factory in upstate New York may soon be making components for its rivals.

Tesla has an agreement to buy solar cells and modules made at the Buffalo facility by a partner, Panasonic Corp. The Japanese company said it now plans to also offer them to other buyers.

Panasonic’s move comes as Tesla dials back rooftop installations following its 2016 acquisition of rooftop installer SolarCity, and follows President Donald Trump’s decision in January to slap tariffs on imported solar equipment.
