Sustainable Forestry Stands Tall in Trade Deal • Senators Address Expired Fund • Canada and Oil

Sustainable forestry is one little-noticed beneficiary of the newly updated NAFTA deal.

The agreement among the U.S., Canada, and Mexico includes commitments that the three countries will promote sustainable forest management and cooperate on initiatives to promote sustainability, including those to combat illegal logging.

“We continue to lose the Amazon, the biggest forest in the world, because of demand for illegal wood in these three countries,” says Alexander von Bismarck, head of the advocacy group Environmental Investigation Agency and member of a U.S. Trade Representative advisory committee on environmental issues.
