Sterigenics U.S. LLC sued the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for effectively shutting down the company’s facility over toxic air pollution.
In a complaint filed Feb. 18, Sterigenics called it an “extra-legal” maneuver that on Feb. 15 the state effectively halted operations at its facility in Willowbrook, Ill. for allegedly releasing too much ethylene oxide, a potential carcinogen.
The lawsuit comes after a push by residents, state officials, and congressional Democrats to shut down the plant because of what they claim is a public health and environmental danger.
