Start Designing Oregon Superfund Cleanup, EPA Tells Companies

The EPA is ordering three companies to start designing the cleanup for portions of Oregon’s Portland Harbor Superfund site.

Evraz Inc., Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc., and MMGL LLC are bound by the orders to address contamination at the site, according to an EPA letter dated Thursday.

  • The Portland Harbor site is one of the most complex in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund program, involving more than 100 parties potentially responsible for the harbor’s contamination.
  • The harbor site, which includes part of the lower Willamette River, became contaminated with hazardous substances, including dioxins and heavy metals, after decades of industrial use. ...
