Stanford Unable to Get Superfund Costs From HP, for Now

Stanford University lost its bid for an early win against HP Inc., when a federal court ruled it hasn’t shown the company is liable for contributing to contamination on property it once leased from the school that’s now the site of faculty housing.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California denied Stanford’s motion for summary judgment on its Superfund claims for assessment and evaluation costs.

There is a factual dispute whether HP “disposed” of hazardous waste as defined by the Superfund law, the court said.
