Spain’s High Court Orders Prison Over Harmful Emissions

Citing grave damage to the ecosystem, Spain’s Supreme Court has for the first time ordered prison time for business owners whose activities led to excessive greenhouse gas and ozone-damaging emissions.

In a 33-page ruling published Nov. 3, the court sentenced two businessmen each to 2 1/2 years in prison for violating Electric and Electronic Waste Regulations (RAEE), thus releasing 3,378 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (Ruling 4242/2015, Tribunal Supremo, Sala de lo Penal, Oct. 13, 2015).
