Some China Green Bonds Still Trending Brown, Analysis Shows

China’s green bonds continue to reach record highs, but a growing number of the issuances are going to projects that don’t align with generally accepted international practices, an analysis of 2019 first half data shows.

The country issued a record $21.8 billion in green bonds in the first half of 2019—a 62% increase over the first half of 2018—only 51% of those issuances met the standards of what green bonds financing should be used for, according to a July 31 midyear report from the Climate Bonds Initiative.
