Solvent May Harm Workers’, Consumers’ Immune Systems, EPA Says

A cancer-causing solvent used to clean equipment and to make refrigerants has too much potential to harm workers and consumers, the EPA said Friday.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s preliminary conclusion about trichloroethylene (TCE) tracks its previous judgment during the Obama administration that the solvent can harm the immune, nervous, or respiratory systems of workers and consumers exposed to it, or cause kidney or liver damage.

If the agency’s final conclusion is consistent with its preliminary findings, it would have to regulate the solvent in some yet-to-be-determined way in order to protect the public.
