Shrimp Trawlers, North Carolina Seek to Avoid Fish Dumping Suit

North Carolina’s environmental department and its shrimp trawlers both say they should be able to avoid an environmental group’s lawsuit over dumped fish and drag nets, according to new filings in a North Carolina federal court.

The North Carolina Coastal Fisheries Reform Group claims the state Department of Environmental Quality violates the public trust doctrine by failing to adequately regulate the trawlers’ activities, according to its lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
