Shipyard Awards Accelerate $21 Billion Navy Optimization Plan

Announcements of more than $10 billion in shipyard modernization since August may be a sign the Navy is speeding up its 20-year, $21 billion Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program.

The latest contract—$8 billion awarded Nov. 10—went to five companies for initial design and planning work at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington state. A $500 million contract issued in September supports construction at the same two shipyards.
