Sheep Grazing’s Effect on Grizzlies, Other Species Needs Review

The Department of Agriculture must reconsider how grazing by domestic sheep used for its research service will affect bighorn sheep and grizzly bears in Idaho, a federal court in the state ruled in a win for conservation groups.

The USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Sheep Station supports research using sheep owned by the University of Idaho. The station uses land it owns and other public property used through memos of understanding with federal agencies.

The agency’s final environmental impact statement discusses how grazing could affect other animal species on non-ARS properties. But it doesn’t satisfy the federal government’s need to separately...
