Shasta Dam Fight With Water District Ends in California (1)

The struggle between the state of California and a powerful water district over raising the height of Shasta Dam to expand the largest reservoir in the state has ended, for now.

The Westlands Water District on Sept. 30 formally stopped its environmental review of a $1.4 billion U.S. Bureau of Reclamation plan to raise the 602-foot dam by another 18.5 feet.

It is unclear what Westlands’ decision will mean for the future of the project, which had already been separately delayed over federal funding issues, the awarding of a land-consulting contract, and land surveys.
