Shades of Flint in N.J. as Newark Water Filters Fail to Nab Lead

Newark, the New Jersey city at the forefront of an economic revival, is giving bottled drinking water to as many as 1,400 homes after tap tests showed city-supplied filters could be ineffective.

The state’s most-populous city has taken steps to limit lead exposure since January 2017, when it disclosed the presence of the element, which can cause organ damage. Water from two homes exceeded federal and state lead standards, the Environmental Protection Agency said Aug. 9.
