Scope of EPA Chemical Analyses Hot Item for Agency Advisers (2)

The EPA should examine more ways workers might be injured by their exposure to a solvent used to make pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and other products as the agency works to complete its analysis, agency advisers said July 30.

For example, the Environmental Protection Agency’s draft evaluation of the solvent, 1,4-dioxane, focuses on workers, yet it did not examine the risks the chemical could pose to pregnant workers, said Kathleen Gilbert, a retired immunology professor from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
