Santa Rosa, Calif., Adopts Electric-Only Mandate

Santa Rosa, Calif., amid a lingering wildfire season, is the latest San Francisco Bay Area city to adopt requirements for new housing to have all-electric appliances and heating.

The Santa Rosa City Council’s unanimous vote Nov. 19 adopting all-electric mandates comes as Pacific Gas and Electric Co. prepares to start turning off electricity in advance of high winds and fire danger forecast in Northern California. The mass blackouts are meant to prevent live wires from igniting wildfires during unusually powerful wind storms.
