Salmon Harvest Will Push Whales Toward Extinction, Court Told

The National Marine Fisheries Service approved salmon harvest levels for fisheries in southeast Alaska that will hinder the recovery of the fish and starve southern resident killer whales, a fish conservation group told a federal court in Washington.

The NMFS acknowledged the fisheries will “adversely affect designated critical habitat” of the whales, but instead of considering alternatives, the agency approved maximum harvest levels considered in a 2019 Pacific Salmon Treaty, according to the Wild Fish Conservancy.
