Safety Board Nominees Queried on Qualifications, Agency Needs

Members of a U.S. Senate subcommittee bore down on the lack of experience among three nominees for a federal chemical safety board, and at the same time questioned the nominees keenly during a confirmation hearing about how they would address a growing backlog of cases at the agency.

Sylvia Johnson, Jennifer Sass, and Steve Owens were nominated by President Joe Biden April 28 to fill three of four open seats on the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board. They appeared before a subcommittee for the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Thursday.
