RWE Expects at Least $1.4 Billion Per Coal Gigawatt Retired

RWE AG expects at least 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion) in compensation for every gigawatt of coal-fired power it closes as part of Germany’s plan to stop burning the dirtiest fossil fuel by 2038, according to a spokeswoman.

A commission appointed by Chancellor Angela Merkel published a report Feb.1 calling for the closure of Germany’s remaining 45 gigawatts of coal-fired power stations. It recommended this month that 12.6 gigawatts of capacity come off line by the end of 2022 to help Germany catch up on pledges to cut carbon emissions.
