Rio Tinto Copper Mine Land Swap Needs Blocking, Green Groups Say

The federal government must be stopped from giving land to Rio Tinto Corp. pending a lawsuit over the rushed approval process for the project, environmental and tribal groups told an Arizona federal court.

The exchange involves giving Rio Tinto more than 2,400 acres of public land in Arizona for the company’s planned Resolution Copper Mine. The land transfer would privatize Oak Flat, which is a sacred area, and remove federal protections at the site, according to the motion for preliminary injunction filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.
