Republican Leaders Plan to Move Air Permit Bill Without Democrats

Republican leaders plan to move legislation that would streamline air pollution permits for new or expanded power plants, refineries, and factories through the House energy panel without Democratic support.

“I wish I could address the concerns of my Democratic colleagues,” Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.), who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment, told reporters after a May 16 hearing to discuss the draft legislation, which would revise the EPA air pollution permitting program known as New Source Review.

But, he added, “there’s a lot of support for reforming this process.”
