Refineries, Factories Get More Air Quality Monitoring Flexibility (1)

Refineries, paper mills, and factories might not have to measure air quality in areas where public access has been placed off-limits through signs, fences, mountain cliffs, or other barriers, the EPA said in draft guidance released Nov. 9.

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to extend monitoring of ambient air—the air people breathe—beyond the fenceline of industrial facilities. But the agency is giving these industries the flexibility they have sought to avoid monitoring air quality in areas where the public has no access.
