Proposed Pipeline Crack Standards Go Too Far, Industry Says

A federal proposal on cracked-pipe repairs is too aggressive and could cost gas pipeline operators time and money for inspections, operators’ representatives told the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

The agency wants to require that operators conduct emergency inspections when pipes expected to withstand certain amounts of pressure become cracked.

Representatives for Enbridge Inc. and Xcel Energy Inc. told the agency that inspection technology isn’t advanced enough to produce data the regulation would require, potentially leading to false positives and unnecessary excavation.
