Polar Bear Study Gets Unusual Request for Comments From Interior

The Trump administration is asking for rare public comment on a federal study looking at the impacts of seismic surveys on polar bears in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking public comment on the “value” and methodology of a scientific model two of its scientists are using for the seismic surveys for oil and gas, and their potential impact on maternal polar bear dens, according to a Federal Register notice published Tuesday. It’s unusual to seek comment on such a study, according to a law professor and two former government officials.
